Do you have an I or we mentality?! Hows’ your relationship with God?

For as long as I can remember, we have always been told that there is no I in team. This phrase is often used to remind us that we can not do everything on our own. To me, it’s a constant reminder that we have to work together and not be selfish and try to accomplish things in our own strength. The word team means when two or more people work together, and they usually come together to achieve a common goal. So that means that teamwork requires some form of relationship, whether it’s with your spouse, kids, family, friends, or with God! These are the people who should have like minds and want what’s best for you. But too many times we've witnessed people trying to do this thing called life on their own. When in reality, you were never created to walk it alone!

I am nothing without my team, which includes God, my family, and friends. The Bible says, “Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for GOD’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to GOD! Run from evil! Your body will glow with health, and your very bones will vibrate with life!” (Proverbs‬ ‭3:5-8 MSG). Hallelujah, can I get an amen! Just from that verse, It sounds like life is/will be so much better with God. So again, I pose this question to you, do you have an I or we mentality? Do you try to do things in your own strength?! Or do you depend on our Heavenly Father to aid and assist you? In a relationship, it has to be more than one person, and that means it’s no longer an I mentality but an we mentality. Who is “we” in your story? Who is the "we" on your team? History shows us that our savior took one for the team so that we might have life and have it more abundantly. Christ has always had us in mind. That phrase to take one for the team means to willingly undertake an unpleasant task or make a personal sacrifice for the collective benefit of one’s friends or colleagues. When he died on that cross, he freely stayed and ensured our future through a very unpleasant assignment where he was beaten and crucified on our behalf. This moment in history was a personal sacrifice for the collective benefit of all of God’s children. John 3:16 states, “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person’s failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him.” John‬ ‭3:16-18‬ ‭MSG‬‬.

We can no longer move in this world with an I mentality, we must have a relationship with God and know that we are in this together. I am never alone, it’s never just about me, there is always a bigger picture. God is the captain of my team and when I am weak he is strong. So again, we must recognize that he has already stepped in and took one for our team. It is time to follow his lead. That sacrifice was never just about him, he has ALWAYS had us on his mind. So “If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care —then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.” ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2:1-4‬ ‭MSG‬‬

BFF’s I pray that your mind is renewed and no longer focused on what you can do in your own strength but what we can do when Christ is on our side. I pray that we have a mentality like the people in Acts 4:32 NIV when “All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.” They realized that everything they had and possessed was not because of anything they did but because of who he was! He is everything we need, every teammate we could ever wish for. In case you don’t know already, let me remind you of all his titles.

And he shall be called Advocate (1 John 2:1),
